SERVPRO Works to Restore Homes After Fire Damage

Naples often has the reputation of a prime retirement city in Florida and is indeed a major retirement destination.  However, it is also a city with a rich and abundant history dating back to before Florida's discovery by Ponce de Leon in 1513. The Calusa tribe lived in the region before Ponce de Leon arrived until war and the Europeans' diseases destroyed them within 40 years. Later on, in the 1700s, the ancestors of Seminoles resided in the region. Seminoles were comprised of the Creek tribes and escaped slaves and refugees.

It wasn't until the late 1800s when General John Williams from Louisville, KY, heard about the region and decided to buy land and develop a city. In 1885, General Williams and his business partner Walter Haldeman chartered a boat and sailed to Naples, where they found a beautiful beach stretch. They stayed, built homes, and developed the area into a town; officially in 1886, establishing a town named Naples. In 1889, the business partners opened the Naples Hotel in the center of town. Rose Cleveland, sister of President Cleaveland, was the first official guest of the hotel.

For the next 50 years, Naples remained a small town until Collier County's creation in 1923 by the wealthy Barron Gift Collier. At that point, it developed into the larger and more prosperous city that we see today.

Popular activities in Naples and the surrounding areas include:

  • Outdoor exploration: Naples is close to the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, various beaches, estuaries, and swamp areas containing diverse wildlife ranging from alligators to sea birds to dolphins.
  • Visiting the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary: Home to one of the best bird-watching sites in America.
  • Golf: The average temperature of 75 degrees year-round makes enjoying one of the 80 golf courses found in Naples very enjoyable.
  • Going to see the smallest post office in the USA: found just outside of Naples, the Ochopee Post Office.
